Our Commitment towards Sustainability

As a leading homegrown supermarket chain in Malaysia, we pride ourselves in being inclusive, offering Malaysians a wide selection of quality, fresh produce and grocery items at a variety of consumer-conscious price points. This is critical as it ensures no individual’s background or socio-economic status impedes their access to quality everyday essentials.

Jaya Grocer aims to create a sustainable future without compromising accessibility and affordability for communities in need through strategic collaborations with trusted suppliers and partners.

Encouraging local and responsible sourcing

Sourcing products within Malaysia directly supports local farmers, creates jobs, boosts the local economy, and maximizes the value of our natural resources. On top of this, sourcing locally also translates to lower prices for end-consumers as logistics costs are lower relative to importing items. Today, the majority of our fresh vegetables, poultry, eggs and seafood are sourced from local farms across Malaysia.

In addition, we encourage responsible sourcing across our supply chain. We support Orang Asli communities by procuring their crops and making their produce available across our stores. One of our exclusive partners, OA Organik, directly works with Orang Asli communities across Malaysia to provide agriculture training, essential technology and marketing support to the Orang Asli, to empower them to cultivate eco-farms which protect the forest while also producing high-quality produce.

Making sustainable choices affordable and accessible

Jaya Grocer is committed to raising awareness and providing education to the broader community, making it easier to adopt sustainable practices as part of a daily lifestyle.

We have begun our journey in recent years. One example of this includes introducing Farm Fresh Milk-on-tap kiosks across 5 Jaya Grocer outlets. These kiosks allow customers to purchase milk in glass bottles which are cleaned and reused. Since it was rolled out in September 2022, more than 31,000 litres of milk have been sold via these reusable glass bottles, with an average refill rate of 3.4 times.

We recently also partnered with Bio Home in April 2024 to introduce Refill Stations that offer a hassle-free solution for refilling consumers’ cleaning products while reducing plastic waste. In addition to being eco-friendly, this initiative also provides consumers with 20% more savings, making sustainable living accessible to all.

Our Journey

While Jaya Grocer is committed to developing a stronger and sustainable supply chain, many industries in Malaysia are still nascent and lack economies of scale. This means that sourcing from sustainable farms exclusively would not be able to meet the current demand of all our consumers, nor would prices be competitive. Thus, in our transition, our approach is to offer a variety of options to fulfill the needs of all customers, while actively supporting our commitment to sustainability. We also work closely with suppliers to promote ethical sourcing in our supply chain, for example, in our aspiration of achieving a 100% cage-free egg assortment by 2035.

We are committed to fostering cross-industry partnerships, with the aim of promoting a more sustainable future for our communities. We will review our progress annually as we continuously improve to serve our consumers better.
